Acceleration is the rate of change in velocity from point A to point B. It is the most important component of speed development. The old approach was to concentrate on increasing stride length; however this coaching que can lead to a lot of confusion due to over striding i.e. – applying the brakes.
What do I mean by applying the brakes?
By over striding the athlete tends to reach too far forward, therefor the foot strikes the ground in front of their centre of gravity.
In my acceleration program we concentrate on improving our 0-40m sprint times.
How do we do this?
We develop as much strength as possible in the lower body which gives us more force to apply through the ground therefore improving our acceleration time. It is a known fact that the foot’s contact time with the ground is longer during the acceleration phase which gives us the extra milliseconds to increase speed.
This program is beyond the trial & error phase, it is a carbon copy of what I have used from going a young skinny guy that could do 100m in 13 seconds to a 14 stone man running it in 11.2 seconds. I can guarantee results if you follow this program.
